2 2010 WHY A GENDER EQUALITY POLICY IN HEALTH AND ITS PLAN OF ACTION? The Americas has the greatest inequalities. Gender and Ethnic inequities are exacerbated by their interaction, and with poverty and exclusion to impact health. Gender and Ethnic inequities are those inequalities between men and women of our different populations in the health status, health care and health work that are unjust, unnecessary and avoidable.

7 2010 Plan of Action to Implement the Gender Equality Policy Five years: 2009-2014 Approved by Directing Council in 2009 Regional Launch Consulted with 20 country teams Technical Advisory Group: 3 countries, 3 UN agencies, 3 NGO, Political will of managers, colleagues and partners (dissemination, implementation, monitoring) Reports to the Directing Council, D and countries, in 2011 and 2013

8 2010 Plan of Action: Accountability Indicators Country Cooperation Strategies By 2010, all new CCS include health information dissagregated by gender and age, gender analysis and strategies to address the differences

9 2010 Improving Evidence By 2013, all regional surveys disaggregate data by sex and include gender analysis By 2013, all Health Analysis publications will include analysis based on data disaggregated by sex and age Plan of Action: Accountability Indicators

16 2010 Integration of Gender in the BWP 2010/11 Situation Analysis 3 countries mentioned international commitments. None mentioned the Gender Equality Policy 4 countries and 2 areas dissagregated data by sex, only for specific situations (HIV, TB, accidents, HR) 5 countries and 2 areas included women’s and men’s health situation of diverse populations, also in specific situations. Only JAM and GUT mentioned violence against women Problems and Opportunities 5 countries and FCH mentioned gender ARG and COR identified gender as a priority strategy FCH and ARG presented consistent analysis Implementation Plan Only ARG, COR, and FCH mentioned gender Working Plan 6 countries made link to RER 7.5 (HSD, no FCH) Many present related OSERs Between 4-57 P&S marked with gender. Most of them did not have relation with gender, however, PAR and GUT had some exemplary P&S

17 2010 Integration of Gender Equality in 10 BWP 2010/11 Conclusions Most PASB staff know the Gender Equality Policy, few apply it throughout work/plan Most entities did not understand the gender marking system Most P&S of diseases and maternal health were marked with gender, however, it was not reflected on their composition or tasks
