Chapter 1.2 Methods of Scientists

New Vocubulary Hypothesis: a suggested explanation for observations, or a question that an experiment starts with Independent variable: the factor manipulated by the experimenter Dependent variable: the factor that changes in response to changes in the independent variable

Academic Vocabulary Bias (write down your own definition for what it means) Control: used to show that the results are actually caused by what is being tested. You run the experiment without changing the variables. SI Units: International System of Units, including meters, kilograms, and degrees celsius. Used in all science.

The Nature of Scientific Investigations Question 1.Decide what you want to know 2. Do research 3. Design a test; identify and define variables 4. State a hypothesis and make prediction Test 1. Select a sample 2. Determine how the variables will be controlled and measured 3. Conduct the experiment 4. Record the results Analyze 1. Organize the data using graphs, tables, and charts 2. Look for trends in the data. 3. Compare the data with the hypothesis and the prediction Conclude 1. Look at the data and form conclusions 2. Re-evaluate the hypothesis 3. Formulate new questions

Experimentation The _____________________ is a factor that is manipulated by the experimenter. A(n) _________________ is a factor that can change if the ___________________ is changed. Independent variable Dependent variable Independent variable

Your assignment is to work on pages 8 and 10.
