New Advanced Higher Subject Implementation Events Mathematics Mathematics of Mechanics Unit Assessment at Advanced Higher
3
Unit Assessment – Recap Flexible and open Assessment Standards and Evidence Requirements in Units Greater range of techniques and methodologies for assessment – encouraged Assessments can be designed to provide evidence across more than one outcome or Unit – combined assessments More opportunities to gather naturally occurring evidence – assessment as part of learning and teaching
4
Unit Assessment Support As at Higher, Assessment Support will be provided which you can use to: Assess your candidates Adapt for your own assessment programmes Help you develop your own assessments your own assessments
5
Unit Assessment Support at Advanced Higher – Key Features Valid from August 2015 Complements and supports learning and teaching Assess competence against Unit Outcomes and Assessment Standards Designed to encourage professional judgement Show range of approaches to generating assessment evidence Give information on the type of evidence which could be gathered
6
Unit Assessment Support at Advanced Higher – Approaches Package 1 Unit by Unit approach – discrete assessment tasks for each Unit Package 2 Unit by Unit approach – discrete assessment tasks for each Unit Package 3 Portfolio approach – naturally occurring evidence
7
Assessment Support Package: Units Mathematics Methods in Algebra and Calculus Applications of Algebra and Calculus Geometry, Proof and Systems of Equations Mathematics of Mechanics Force, Energy and Periodic Motion Linear and Parabolic Motion Mathematical Techniques for Mechanics
8
Assessment Support Package: Outcomes All the Units at Advanced Higher Mathematics and Mathematics of Mechanics have only one Outcome To pass the Outcome and therefore the Unit candidates need to successfully demonstrate each Assessment Standard.
9
Assessment Support Package: Examples Mathematics Applications of Algebra and Calculus Unit (Pack 2) Mathematics of Mechanics Force, Energy and Periodic Motion Unit (Pack 2)
10
Unit Assessment Support What the package covers in summary Judging evidence Judging evidence tables Re-assessment arrangements Assessment grid and marking guidance Appendix 1: Assessment for candidates
11
Unit Assessment Support: Judging Evidence SQA has two methods for meeting the Assessment Standards Method A For Outcome 1: each Assessment Standard will be met when the candidate has successfully demonstrated more than half the points across the entire Assessment Standard. Method B For Outcome 1: each Assessment Standard will be met when the candidate has successfully demonstrated competence in more than half the sub-skills for the Assessment Standard.
12
Assessment Standards Making assessment judgements Assessment for candidates 1.1 Applying algebraic skills to the binomial theorem and to complex numbers The sub-skills in the Assessment Standard are: 1.expanding expressions using the binomial theorem 2.performing algebraic operations on complex numbers Sub-skill 1 is attached to question 1 Sub-skill 2 is attached to question 2 Candidates must successfully demonstrate at least 4 out of 7 points. Unit Assessment Support: Judging Evidence Table
13
Unit Assessment Support: Judging Evidence – Method A
14
Unit Assessment Support: Judging Evidence – Method B
15
Unit Assessment Support: Making assessment judgements Candidates who achieve the Units: Methods in Algebra and Calculus Applications of Algebra and Calculus from the Advanced Higher Mathematics course can use these as evidence for achieving the following Unit: Mathematical Techniques for Mechanics from the Advanced Higher Mathematics of Mechanics course.
16
Unit Assessment Support: What the package covers Re-assessment The same as it is at lower levels. Different questions should be used.
