Imagine Italian food without tomatoes, Mexican food with no rice and bean dish, the Irish without potatoes, chocolate without sugar. Make a list of products or foods that combine things from different continents.

Think about the effects of the Columbian Exchange. Were they all positive? How were different groups effected differently?

Mercantilism Mercantilism –nation increases its wealth and power by obtaining from its colonies gold and silver. – The colonies became a source of raw materials for the mother country (England). – The colonies are expected to be the purchasers of manufactured goods from the mother country. – a colony exists for the economic benefit of the mother country.

One leg- Sugar and molasses from the West Indies were brought to New England Second leg-Rum and other goods sent to West Indies. 3 rd leg-enslaved Africans taken back to the West Indies. (Middle Passage)

Spread of Slavery Slavery was essential to Southern plantation life. – Families could be sold to different masters – Slave codes restricted the movement of slaves However, the business of slavery was important to New England colonies
