ON TARGET Multimedia Principle The term multimedia principle is used to refer to any presentation that uses both words and graphics. According to Clark & Mayer (2011), “Multimedia presentations can encourage learners to engage in active learning by mentally representing the material in words and in pictures and by mentally making connections between the pictorial and verbal representations” (p.71).

ON TARGET Learning Team A Presents: Multimedia Principle- The use of words and graphics Contiguity Principle The use of words with graphic alignment.

ON TARGET Multimedia Principle -Example 1: Figure 4.5. An Interpretive Graphic Illustrating the Process of AIDS Infection. With permission of Roche, Basel, Switzerland. The examples help the learner to make mental connections to the iTunes website. The images connect the learner to the verbal explanation of the information presented.

ON TARGET Contiguity Principle The principle of contiguity also involves the need to coordinate printed words and graphics. When corresponding graphics and words are placed near each other on the screen, they are contiguity in space.

ON TARGET Screens from Lightning Lessons with Separated Text and Graphics (B) Integrated Text and Graphics (A) Contiguity Example 1: Figure 5.10 A and B
