IMAGERY Definition: the author’s use of descriptive or figurative language to create a picture in the reader’s mind. - Can you see/hear/feel what the author is writing? - Use your five senses to engage with the text Examples: “empty as a jungle glade at hot high noon” line 25 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_WeybKZLJA&feature=re lated Close your eyes and visualize where you are and how you feel as this video plays – then share with person next to you

INDIVIDUAL WORK Your task: -Highlight/underline words or phrases which use the five senses to give you a personal response to the text -Smells- Feel/touch -Sounds- Colours/word pictures (sight) -Tastes/foods (take 15 minutes to explore the text on your own, quietly) Write down imagery you find on your graphic organizer -(don’t forget to use line numbers for reference)

SHARE DISCOVERIES Form groups of 2-3 -Share your discoveries with each other -Work collaboratively (use other people’s insights) -Record any additional information in your graphic organizer You have 10 minutes to do this

INDIVIDUAL WORK Fill in your Personal Response worksheet -Use information from your graphic organizer -Focus on what you thought/felt while reading E.g. I felt that the sense of smell was most important. I could smell the lions’ fur. It reminded me of when I went to the zoo when I was a kid. I was afraid the lion would break out of the cage and attack me… You need to show your completed Graphic Organizer and your Personal Response worksheet before you can leave
