States of Matter Chapter 3.1 PPT Notes

I. Solids Solid: State of matter where the substance has a definite shape and definite volume. Definite = Unchanging, well defined

A. Particles in a Solid KC: The particles in a solid are packed close together and can only vibrate.

B. Types of Solids 1.Crystalline Solids: Particles form a regular, repeating pattern. Ex. Table salt, sugar Table SaltDiamond

2. Amorphous Solids: Particles do not form a regular, repeating pattern. Ex. Plastics, rubber, glass

II. Liquids Liquid: The state of matter that has a definite volume, but an indefinite shape. “in” = the opposite of Same volume, different shapes

A. Particles in a Liquid KC: The particles in a liquid are packed close together and can slide past each other..

B. Properties of Liquids Surface Tension: A force that pulls the particles together in a liquid. TPS: How many drops of water can fit on a penny?

Viscosity: The resistance of a liquid to flow. Ex. High viscosity = Cold honey Low viscosity = Water, hot honey

III. Gases Gas: The state of matter that has an indefinite volume and an indefinite shape.

A. Particles in a Gas KC: The particles in a gas are far apart and collide frequently.
