Born on January 19, 1839 in Provence in the South of France. His father was the co-founder in a banking firm and his mother a stay-at-home mom; Paul also had two younger sisters, Marie and Rose He attended formal schooling, including law school. However, during his entire time in law school, he always received drawing and art lessons. Cezanne moved to Paris in 1861 which cause huge problems with his dad. Eventually Cezanne’s dad came around.

In Paris, Cezanne met and studied under Camille Pissarro. They traveled the French countryside and painted a lot of landscapes. Cézanne was interested in the simplification of naturally occurring forms to their geometric essentials: he wanted to "treat nature by the cylinder, the sphere, the cone" (a tree trunk may be conceived of as a cylinder, an apple or orange a sphere, for example).

Cézanne's paintings were shown in the first exhibition of the Salon Des Refuses in 1863.

He concentrated on a few subjects and was equally proficient in each of these genres: still lifes, portraits, landscapes and studies of bathers.

One day, Cézanne was caught in a storm while working in the field. Only after working for two hours under a downpour did he decide to go home; but on the way he collapsed. He was taken home by a passing driver. He died a few days later, on October 22, 1906 of pneumonia.
