2. 27-28 October 2011 2 Car theft  Covers the respondent and other household members  The term ‘car’ also covers a van or pick-up truck for personal use  ‘Car theft’ means any such vehicle stolen or driven away without permission. The event should be recorded even if the vehicle was later found and returned  Not include cases when a vehicle was taken by a family member without permission, unless the owner considers this to be theft. –have you or anyone else in your household had a car, van or pick-up truck stolen or driven away without permission?

3. 27-28 October 2011 3 Theft from car  Covers the respondent and other household members  The term ‘car’ also covers a van or pick-up truck for personal use.  Theft of vehicle parts or of items from inside a vehicle (such as radio, car mirror, spare tyre or luggage) should also be included here.  The thefts of goods that were in a car while the whole car was stolen (SCCARTHEF=1) should not be reported here. −have you or anyone else in your household had anything stolen from a car, van or pick-up truck? This includes parts of the vehicle, possessions in the car, or other things.

4. 27-28 October 2011 4 Motorcycle theft  Covers the respondent and other household members  For the purpose of this variable a ‘scooter’ means a light motor cycle with a small engine but not a child's toy with two wheels that one can stand on and move by pushing one foot against the ground.  It should not include cases when a motorcycle, scooter or moped, was taken by a family member without permission, unless the owner considers this to be theft. −Did you or anyone else in your household have a motorcycle, scooter or moped stolen or driven away without permission?

5. 27-28 October 2011 5 Bicycle theft  Covers the respondent and other household members  It should not include cases when a bicycle was taken by a family member without permission, unless the owner considers this to be theft  Children’s bicycles, if they are two-wheelers, should be included −have you or anyone else in your household had a bicycle stolen −in case the bicycle was stolen during burglary to the cellar which is a part of a home should it be reported here or under burglary?

6. 27-28 October 2011 6 Burglary in main home  Only the main residence is covered  Burglary is defined as gaining illegal access to a dwelling by or without the use of force to steal goods  Variable should also cover burglary in cellars that are part of the home and static mobile homes/caravans.  Thefts from the garden, garage, shed or lock-up or from a second home should not be included as well as attempted burglary. −Did anyone actually get into your main home without permission and steal or try to steal something? I am not including here thefts from the garden, garage, shed or lock-up or from a second home  Shall we ask whether household members present at home? or whether they had any contact with the offender? Or whether violence was used or threatened against them?

7. 27-28 October 2011 7 Robbery  Respondent personally  Robbery in this variable is completed or attempted theft, directly from a person, of property or cash by force or threat of force, with or without a weapon and with or without injury  Pick-pocketing, extortion and blackmailing are excluded.  Attempted robbery should be reported here. –Next I would like to ask you some questions about what may have happened to you personally. Things that you have mentioned already or which happened to other members of your household should not be mentioned here. –Please include anything that happened to you in the last five years. These incidents could have taken place in the street, for instance, in a pub, in a park, on public transport, at work, or at home. –Has anyone stolen, or tried to steal something from you by using force or threatening you with force –Shall we ask whether this happened at home, wouldn't that be rather burglary? The attempted robbery is also in the question. Later we ask whether something was really stolen, should we keep it like it is?

8. 27-28 October 2011 8 Theft of personal property  Respondent personally  Thefts from the victim, but without the use of physical force or the threat of it, for example the theft committed by a person who has the permission/right to be in the household premises or in a changing room, at the beach, at the office on trains or other means of transportation. Pick-pocketing and theft of low value items should be covered.  Thefts by using force or threat are not covered here, nor theft from a car reported already in the variable SCFROMCAR. –Excluding thefts by using force or threat, there are many other types of theft of personal property, such as pick-pocketing or theft of a purse, wallet, clothing, jewellery, mobile phone, and mp3 player, or sports equipment. –Have you personally been victim of any of these incidents? –As there is a follow up question on whether respondent was holding/carrying what was stolen I do assume that other possible types of theft are covered here. However, the wording of proposed question seems not to explicitly mention it. The definition seems to cover more than the question proposed. Different lists of the circumstances and/or types of property that may have been stolen may produce different results in terms of response, thus affecting the resulting victimization rate. This question could include theft of articles left around but not worn or carried on the person (for example leaving money in a drawer in office)

9. 27-28 October 2011 9 Consumer fraud  Respondent personally  Deceptive practices that result in financial or other losses for consumers in the course of seemingly legitimate business transactions, for instance cheating in terms of quantity, quality or pricing of the goods or services when selling, or delivering a service.  Now changing the subject, in the last five years, were you yourself the victim of a consumer fraud. In other words, have you been cheated in terms of the quantity, quality or pricing of the goods being sold or services delivered? This could also have happened when you bought something over the Internet.

10. 27-28 October 2011 10 Card / on-line banking abuse  Respondent personally  Card or on line banking abuse is using a credit card or other banking card or information necessary for bank account access, to withdraw money or buy goods or services either directly at a shop or using internet, without permission of the owner. –has information from your credit card, cash card, debit card, bank card or on-line bank account been used without permission, to steal from you, or to defraud you?

11. 27-28 October 2011 11 Bribery / backhander  Respondent personally  Corruption means offering or accepting financial or any other advantage in exchange for favourable treatment. The respondent does not have to disclose whether he/she really paid or offered the expected bribe in terms of money, gift or a favour in exchange. The fact that such a "reward" was expected from the respondent is what is to be reported.  Various types of public or government sector officers should be covered here as well as professionals possibly in the private sector (e.g. a police officer, inspector, customs officer, doctor or teacher). –Has anyone such as a police officer, other government official (for example an inspector or a customs officer), a doctor, or teacher asked you, or expected you to pay a bribe [or backhander] for his or her services?
