Inference is the act or process of deriving a conclusion based solely on what one already knows.

We can infer that something is true based on data. We use the data to draw conclusions about a general idea.

We often get our data from Observations!

What’s the difference between an observation and an inference? You OBSERVE a lady walking down the street with a briefcase. You note the clothes she is wearing and the direction she is walking. ALL observations.

Inference We can INFER, or make an inference that because of the way she is dressed, the briefcase she is carrying, and the direction she is headed, she is going to work. We don’t know this… we INFER it.

Story #5: “Wow!” said Kim. “That was a pretty one!” All the people were looking at the dark sky. “There goes another one!” said Mom. “It lights up the sky!” When the show was over, the tired children went home and went to bed.

1. What were the people doing? 2. Was it nighttime or daytime?

Story #6: The boys poked holes in the lids of the jars. They went outside to look around the yard. “There’s one!” said Bobby. “Now let’s find one for you!”
