PROGRAMME

THE PROBLEM Being overweight is associated with a number of chronic diseases, the higher your BMI, the higher your risk of developing a lifestyle associated disease Poor heart health Poor blood sugar management Increased wear and tear on joints Premature ageing Sleep difficulties

WHY DO WE STORE FAT? Prehistoric man would eat as much as possible when food was abundant because he knew it wouldn’t last The body would build up fat stores and convert the fat into energy when food wasn’t available and that is how our species survived The way our body deals with excess consumption hasn’t changed but the way we eat has

WHY DO WE STORE FAT? Fat was never meant to accumulate, but to be converted to energy through the seasons of low and plenty Carbohydrates (glucose) are stored as fat if not needed immediately for energy

WHAT IS A KETOGENIC DIET? Ketogenic diet is based on eating low carbohydrate & adequate protein 3 main sources the body burns for energy 1.Glucose (carbohydrates) – this is the body’s first choice and any carbohydrates present will be used for energy before other sources

WHAT IS A KETOGENIC DIET? 2.Lipid (fat) – when dietary glucose is very low the body will break down fat in order to create a source of energy, this process generates ketones 3.Protein – if there is not enough glucose or protein from the diet then the body will breakdown muscle tissue to release protein to burn for energy

WHAT IS A KETOGENIC DIET? Changing from eating this : To eating this:

WHAT IS A KETOGENIC DIET? Restricting dietary carbohydrates causes the body to look for another source of energy - FAT

WHAT IS A KETOGENIC DIET? If you eat less carbohydrate than you need for energy, then fat will be burned As liver breaks down fat it produces ketones which we measure in the urine By eating enough protein you will ensure the body burns fat while maintaining muscle mass and metabolic rate

WHY CHOOSE A KETOGENIC DIET By working with natures systems the metabolic rate does not become stressed or slow down Without enough calories (calorie restricted diets) the body will kick into survival mode, the metabolism will slow down, making it harder to maintain a healthy weight

WHY CHOOSE A KETOGENIC DIET Calorie controlled diets often result in weight loss but not necessarily fat loss, muscle is often broken down to release protein

HOW OUR BODIES ARE DESIGNED TO WORK The bodies innate programming takes charge and uses fat, the secondary source of energy to maintain energy requirements We were not designed to cope with the amounts of carbohydrates we now eat on a daily basis

WHAT IS KETOSIS? Ketosis is a natural process – it occurs after prolonged exercise and in people on a low carbohydrate diet If you eat less carbohydrate than you need for energy then fat will be burned in a process called ketosis Ketosis is a safe process where the body breaks down fat to use for energy As the liver breaks down fat it generates ketone bodies we can test for in the urine
