SWBAT… evaluate algebraic expressions Agenda 1. WU (10 min) 2. Evaluating expressions – practice problems & notes (30 min) 3. Work on HW#5 (10 min) Warm-Up: 1.) In your own words, explain what it means to evaluate an expression. 2.) Evaluate 2a when a = -3. 3.) Evaluate 2a 2 when a = -3. HW#5: Evaluating Expressions Fri, 8/24
6
A number next to a letter means to ____________ 2 × a = (2)(a) = 2∙a = 2*a = 2a This is a multiplication sign, not the variable x MULTIPLY!!!!!
7
Directions: Evaluate the following expressions when a = 2, b = 3, and c = -4. 1.) -2c + ab 2.) a – 2c 3.) 4.) a 2 + c 2 5.)

Expressions – Vocabulary An algebraic expression consists of sums and/or products of numbers and variables. i.e. x 3 + x 2 3xy 3 + 2xyz – 4 0.10d A term is either a single number or variable, or the product of several numbers or variables separated from another term by a + or – sign The variable term is the term that contains the variables. The constant term is a term that does not have a variable. The coefficient of a term is the numerical part (the number in front or to the left of the variable)
9
Example: x 2 + 5x – 6 1. Is this an expression or equation? Expression 2. List the terms? x 2, 5x, -6 3. List the variable terms? x 2, 5x 4. List the constant term? -6 5. List the coefficients? 1, 5
10
Example: a 2 – 4a + 3 Algebraic equation or expression: Terms: Variable terms: Constant term: Coefficients: Warning!!! Always take the sign that is in front of the coefficient!
11
Example: a 2 – 4a + 3 Algebraic equation or expression: expression Terms: a 2, -4a, 3 Variable terms: a 2, -4a Constant term: 3 Coefficients: 1, -4 Warning!!! Always take the sign that is in front of the coefficient!
12
Exit Slip: Complete on ½ sheet Evaluate the expressions when x = -3 and y = 5 1.) 15 ÷ 5 ● x ● 2y 2.) 2x 2 – x
