G.Barber: Mice-International Meeting 2-7-20033 Reasons to build the Sci-Fi Prototype The aims of the Single stage prototype will be to:- Prove the feasibility of the design Solve any production problems Try to develop more efficient (and cheaper if possible) construction techniques Ensure that all stages can be made exactly the same Test the efficiency of the light guide connectors To create a working detector to allow full system functionality to be developed

G.Barber: Mice-International Meeting 2-7-200310 Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The 1 st Iteration… This had 126 - 380 holes which where so close that it is impossible to mould not to mention that they would need to have the fibres threaded in the correct order.

G.Barber: Mice-International Meeting 2-7-200311 Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The 2nd Iteration… This has a diagonal stagger to maximise the distance between the holes (it was still not enough) AND STILL 126 separate 350 fibres Need to be threaded per connector!!!

G.Barber: Mice-International Meeting 2-7-200312 Design of the Fibre Optic Connectors The 3rd Iteration… This has a diagonal stagger to maximise the distance between the holes but more important is that it multiplexes at the stage. This means that the fibres will be threaded in bundles of 7 from the Fibre plane and all subsequent units will have 18 1mmØ fibres.

G.Barber: Mice-International Meeting 2-7-200315 Design of the Single Stage The aim, as already stated, is to have all the stages the same. This means that there is only one development programme. Further advantages are:- that the amount of spares can be minimum All stages are interchangeable should it be necessary to fit a less efficient stage in a less critical position Production will be easier

G.Barber: Mice-International Meeting 2-7-200316 Work in Progress We have now put a line under the construction of the model and will concentrate on the Prototype detector. To this end trials are taking place to lay-up the fibres in the required format and we will be visiting Alan Bross with a view to speaking with the experts who have developed the techniques and adapting them for 350 fibre.

G.Barber: Mice-International Meeting 2-7-200317 The Laying Down of Fibres This is our 1 st attempt to lay the fibres parallel using a PTFE grooved plate. PTFE Bonded to an Aluminium Block 200 Grooves under a Microscope A Small Array of Fibres Laid Out and Bonded

G.Barber: Mice-International Meeting 2-7-200320 Schedule This is still our schedule and it is still very tight. The good thing is that everybody is pulling together and we have received offers for machine shop effort which we hope to pursue. A big thank you also to all for advice freely given
