1. Algebra Skills Aims To practice some of the algebraic skills you will need this year including: Collecting like terms Expanding and factorising Substitution and negative numbers Solving equations Changing the subject

2. Collecting Like Terms You will each need a mini white board, a pen and a cloth. This task is designed to see what you know. Also have a pen and paper to hand and make a note of any questions you find challenging or answer incorrectly.

5. Expanding Brackets Expand: a)-3(5x – 1) b)2g(5 – g) c)ab(2a + bc + c)

6. Ask, Ask, Swap Get up out your seats. Find a partner. Introduce yourselves. Ask the question on your card, check the answer on the back. Ask the question on the other persons card, check the answer on the back. Discuss any errors in working out. Swap cards. Find a new partner.

7. Substitution Bingo Draw a 4 x 4 grid and fill with numbers between 1 and 25. Answer each question on your whiteboard. First person to get a line wins.

11. Factorising Fully factorise: a) 4x - 10 b) 6h 2 + h c) 12d 2 + 4d Means writing with brackets in.

12. Factorised fully? On the worksheet there are a number of expressions that have been factorised. It is your job to decide if they have been factorised as fully as possible. If they can be factorised more completely make the corrections in the final column. Using the letters from the questions that were fully factorised you should be able to spell a word.

13. Solving Equations I would like you to consider the method of doing the same thing to both sides. Example: Solve 2x – 9 = 7 http://www.flashymaths.co.uk/swf/equations.swf

14. Changing the Subject We can use the same method for changing the subject as we did to solve equations. Examples: Make x the subject if: a)y = 2x – 9b) a = 3b - x 2

15. Changing the Subject There is an alternative method using a flow diagram. Examples: Make x the subject if: a)y = 2x – 9b) a = 3b - x 2

16. Changing the Subject Triangle matching puzzle. All the smaller triangle cards should match up to make a larger triangle! Change the subject for each formula and find the corresponding answer. For formulae with more than two letters you will have to rearrange in both possible ways to find the solution. Good luck!
