4 UNIT 8: CRITICAL READING AND NOTE TAKING METHODS: SEPTEMBER 15 – SEPTEMBER 21 Most likely the largest portion of your schoolwork will be used to complete the required reading assignments for each unit. The reading assignments and activities in each unit will provide you with the information you need to respond intelligently to discussion questions, participate fully in the seminar or discussion, complete the projects, and take tests. In this unit, you will have the opportunity to apply a commonly used reading method to test your reading comprehension. You will also learn about note taking methods and how to best take notes from your readings. Because you are not sitting in classroom taking notes, it will be important for you to take notes from reading assignments.

9 READING TEXTBOOKS AND ARTICLES Reading comprehension, our ability to understand and remember the material we read, is a skill that weakens if not used. For that reason, we need to learn the process involved in reading comprehension and make sure to apply it. During your college career and beyond, you will be faced with situations requiring you to read books, articles, journals, documents, and website information for content and comprehension. Furthermore, you may be asked to analyze and interpret the information in these reading materials and reflect upon them in written form.

10 NOTE TAKING METHODS Note taking systems are formats that assist us with the arrangement of information. The idea is to take notes on the important terms, concepts, theories, and ideas only. Using an effective note taking strategy that emphasizes your personal learning style can save you time, energy, and help reduce stress. The key to academic and professional success is organizing the information you have available. Different formats work for different people. You can experiment to find the note taking method that works best for you.
