Sin And Satisfaction 1 John 2:1-6

Clarifying Two Points Because we cannot say we will not sin is not, therefore, an excuse to sin. Walking in the light has to do with intimate knowledge of the will of God.

The Purpose Of The Writing 1 John 2:1 -- “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.”

Understanding the Seriousness of Sin Romans 6:23 -- …for the wages of sin is death….

Matthew 5:29-30 – “If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. 30 And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.”

Sin will take you farther than you want to go Keep you longer than you want to stay And cost you more than you want to pay.

Our Advocate 1 John 2:1b-2 -- But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. 2 He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. PARAKLETOS – An advocate HILASMOS – Propitiation; satisfaction Universality of atonement

Jesus is a Righteous Advocate Not a “defense” attorney Rather an “intermediary” A representative who will favor us before God.

True Knowledge of God 1 John 2:3-6 -- We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. 4 The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: 6 Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

True knowledge of God is demonstrated by true obedience to His commands. If we say we know Him, but do not obey, we are liars.

How to tell liars from saints: Liars claim fellowship but walk in darkness. (1:6) Liars claim to be without sin (or ignore their sin). (1:8) Liars claim to know God, but ignore His holy will. (2:4)

The Obedience/Love Connection Vs. 5 – “But if anyone obeys His word, God’s love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in Him.” Our love of God complete.

Walking as Jesus Did Vs. 6 – Whoever claims to live in Him must walk as Jesus did. How did Jesus walk?
