2 Finding the X- and Y-Intercepts To find the x- and y-intercepts, you need to know what to look for… X-intercept is where the graph touches the x-axis Y-intercept is where the graph touches the y-axis (Hutchinson, 2013)

3 Finding Intercepts Using a Table If the equation is in standard form, it may be useful to find the x- and y-intercepts using a table. X-intercept is when y = 0 because it is on the x-axis Y-intercept is when x = 0 because it is on the y-axis xy 03 40

4 Application to Real World X- and Y-Intercepts can be used to find the origin of information and the ending result of testing In this graph, it shows the decline of population in a small city from 1950 until today. The Y-intercept shows that the population in 1950 was 2350 people. The X-intercept shows that the population reaches close to 0 currently.
