3 What’s the Big Idea? ★R★R eference Resource: A source that provides specific information. ★S★S ome reference sources are better for locating certain information than others. If you needed to get directions to your friends house, would you look in the dictionary? If you needed to find the definition of a word, would you look in the phone book?

4 Let’s Get Thinking... ★S★S ecretaries, please take out one slate and marker. ★W★W ith your team, see if you can come up with a list of resources you may use to look up information. ★L★L et’s share out some of our thoughts!

6 Super Stinger-Notes ★ As we go through our lesson today, please follow along and fill-in your stinger notes.

7 Dictionary We use a dictionary to look up words! You will find the meaning, or definition, of the words in the dictionary. Other items that can be found in a dictionary: syllabication, part of speech, pronunciation, spelling, various tenses of the words. Example: What happens when you do not know the meaning of a word in a story? You can use the dictionary to look up the meaning of the word.

9 Thesaurus In a thesaurus, you will find synonyms for words. First, you look up the word in the thesaurus. Next to the word you will find a list of words that mean the same as the word you looked up. Also, in a thesaurus you will find an antonym for the word. Example: Horrible or awful would be an antonym for wonderful. Example: If you wanted to replace the word “wonderful” in your essay you could look in the thesaurus. You might find these words; great, magnificent, excellent, terrific, book, and fantastic.

10 Atlas An atlas is a book of maps. You can reference an atlas to find a specific place, street, road, city, or state. (...and much more!) Example: Many people use an atlas when they are going on vacation or traveling to another place. Does anyone have a GPS in their car? This is like an electronic atlas.

11 Almanac ★ An almanac helps us find information about certain dates. ★ This is published annually (which means every year). ★ It tells us average rainfall, temperature and important events of that year in a particular place.

12 Encyclopedias Why do we use encyclopedias? An encyclopedia is used when someone wants to find information about a person, place, or thing. Example: You may want to find out information about George Washington. You can learn about him from reading information in an encyclopedia.

14 Newspaper ★ This is a source that is published on a daily basis and we would look for LOCAL information and CURRENT EVENTS ★ A Newspaper is a type of periodical; something that is published on a regular basis. ★ Can you think of other examples of periodicals?

15 Electronic Source ★ This source (a.k.a. the internet) is where we can go to find UP TO THE MINUTE INFORMATION or if we needed to know about something that is happening RIGHT NOW!

Where should you look to find information about Harriet Tubman? 10. What source would I use to figure out which definition out which definition of “roll” to use in the following sentence... 18 Let’s Wrap It Up ★O★O n the bottom of your notes, please write a situation in which you would need to use a reference resource. ★B★B e careful not to give the answer away, we will trade with a neighbor and see if they can identify the right reference source.
