In October 2012, the Government announced that, despite 5 months of detailed negotiations, it was planning to force through changes to GPs contracts from April 2013. When the contract first changed in 2004, the Government said it would only impose changes in times of emergency. The Government believes this to be one of those times.

Practices now will face significant increases in their workload e.g. screening of patients for dementia (£0.37/patient), risk profiling patients to keep them from hospital admission (£0.74p/patient) remote monitoring for patients with long-term conditions who are stable (£0.21p/patient). At least 4 practices in Cambridgeshire face closure as they will be unable to survive financially.

Fifteen years ago there were around 50 consultants at the Lister Hospital. There were 6 WTE Partners at RCS. Today, there are around 100 consultants at the Lister Hospital. There are 8 Partners and 1 SGP at RCS = 6.5 WTE 40% of GPs are aged over 50; 22% are over 55 so real workforce concerns

In fact, the practice offers over 700 GP appointments/week not including the 120+ seen most days as Sit & Wait This does not include nurse appointments or home visits or telephone appointments We offer 61 GP sessions/week We do not offer 4 minute appointments! The recommendation is for you to be able to see a health professional within 48 hours – which you can.
