Holiness Hebrew holiness… qodesh: (ko'-desh) apartness, sacredness qadosh: {kaw-doshe'} Short Definition: holy Definition: apartness, sacredness qadash: (kaw-dash') to be set apart or consecrated Short Definition: consecrate Definition:to be set apart or consecrated

Holiness Hebrew holiness… Leviticus 10:10 You must distinguish between the holy and the common, between the unclean and the clean…” Leviticus 11:44 I am the LORD your God; consecrate yourselves and be holy, because I am holy.

Holiness How do you distinguish between what is holy and unholy, between clean and unclean?

Holiness Greek holiness… hagios: sacred, holy Short Definition: set apart, holy, sacred Definition: set apart by (or for) God, holy, sacred. hágios – properly, different (unlike), other ("otherness"), holy; for the believer, (hágios) means "likeness of nature with the Lord" because "different from the world." The core meaning of hágios is "different" – thus a temple in the 1st century was hagios ("holy") because it was different from other buildings. In the NT, /hágios ("holy") has the "technical" meaning "different from the world" because "like the Lord."

Holiness “Refiner’s fire, my heart’s one desire Is to be holy, set apart for you Lord… I want to be holy, set apart for you, my master, Ready to do your will”

Holiness Malachi 3:1-3 “See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty. But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver.

Holiness 1 Peter 1: 6-7 “…In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to suffer grief in all kinds of trials. These have come so that your faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honour when Jesus Christ is revealed.”

Holiness Holy means separate, like… Separate from sin Separated (special) to God Pure, unpolluted, uncompromised Completely true For a special purpose (‘sacred’, ‘tapu’)

Holiness Haggai 2:10-14 On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai: “This is what the LORD Almighty says: ‘Ask the priests what the law says: If a person carries consecrated (holy) meat in the fold of his garment, and that fold touches some bread or stew, some wine, oil or other food, does it become consecrated (holy)?’” The priests answered, “No.” Then Haggai said, “If a person defiled by contact with a dead body touches one of these things, does it become defiled?” “Yes,” the priests replied, “it becomes defiled.” Then Haggai said, ”‘So it is with this people and this nation in my sight,’ declares the LORD. ‘Whatever they do and whatever they offer there is defiled.

Holiness Do you count yourself “set apart” for God’s service? What does this mean? Are you in the world but not “of it”? What does this mean? Is there stuff in you life that ought not to be there?
