Aerospace Dimensions Introduction To Flight Chapter 1
2
Airplane Components
3
Gods, Angels, Prisoners, And Balloons ► What are three reasons why the myth of Icarus is not true? ► The Montgolfier brother’s created a manned, hot- air balloon that flew for 25 minutes in 1783.
4
Daniel Bernoulli ► Theories laid the groundwork for the science of manned flight. ► He discovered the relationship between pressure and fluids in motion. “As the speed of a fluid increases, the pressure of that fluid decreases.” Faster moving air…low pressure Slower moving air…high pressure
5
Sir Isaac Newton ► He figured out how forces are related to matter. ► Laws of Motion: Law of Inertia: Objects in motion or at rest stay until acted upon by an outside force. 2 nd Law: A force acting on an object causes it to accelerate in that direction. F = ma Law of Action/Reaction: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
6
The Language of Wings
7
The Four Forces of Flight ► The Natural Forces: Drag & Weight (Gravity) ► The Artificial Forces: Thrust & Lift
8
3 Axis of Flight Longitudinal axis controls roll (ailerons) Vertical axis controls yaw (rudder) Lateral axis controls pitch (elevator)
9
Creating More Lift… 1. Greater surface area the greater the lift. Ex: Big wings or multiple wings. 2. Greater upper- curvature, called camber the greater the lift. Ex: C-5 Galaxies and 747 jets. 3. Increasing speed produces more lift. Ex: F- 15 Eagle.
10
Stalls ► The engine does not stop in a stall!!! Rather the airflow over the top or camber of the wing is disrupted and lift is no longer possible at that angle of attack. Solution: Decrease your pitch (drop the nose of the airplane.)
