A Peace at Paris In 1918, Democrats lost the House and Senate to Republicans. Wilson had alienated key Republicans, who didn’t want to go along with his ideas. In Wilson’s delegation to the peace table, he snubbed Republicans, Congress, and interventionists. Europeans welcomed Wilson.

Negotiations Big Four controlled negotiations – Clemenceau of France – Wilson of America – George of Britain – Orlando of Italy The treaty did not uphold Wilson’s idea of self- determination. – Broke up Germany – Divided up its colonies among the victors The treaty did create a League of Nations to achieve international peace.

Rejection in the Senate Most Americans supported the treaty. Republicans called the “Irreconcilables” opposed the treaty because of the League of Nations. Wilson campaigned to the people for the treaty. The stress of the campaign brought on a fatal stroke. The Senate rejected the treaty, claiming that the League infringed on American sovereignty. Republican Warren G. Harding won the Election of 1920 largely based on opposition to the treaty.
