Replication
2
The Central Points of Protein Synthesis Are: DNA duplicates itself in replication. DNA produces RNA in transcription. RNA produces proteins in translation.
4
Replication of DNA What happens in interphase of mitosis or meiosis? Process by which DNA makes a copy of itself Each new cell receives a copy of the DNA
5
Separation of strands DNA molecule separate at their base pairs Hydrogen bonds are broken DNA molecule unzips, exposing the nucleotides
6
Base pairing Free nucleotides base pair with exposed nucleotides If strand has thymine as a base what would the complementary base pair be If strand contains cytosine? Each strand builds its complement by base pairing
7
Bonding of bases Sugar and phosphate parts of nucleotides bond together to form backbone of the new strand Each original strand is now bonded to a new strand
8
Results of replication Process of replication produces two molecules of DNA Each new molecule has one strand from the original molecule and one strand that has been newly synthesized
9
Replication is called semi- conservative, one half of the original strand is always saved, or "conserved"
