3 Transition = Teenager The transition from childhood to adolescence is noted for significant developmental changes. The changes brought on by puberty are accompanied by increased autonomy and this independence brings with it an increased responsibility for managing ones own health. Management of personal health requires a level of health literacy. Goal: develop the knowledge and skillls to make decisions that promote optimum health.

5 Behaviours in Building a Climate of Trust and Respect Non-violent behaviour, physical, mental, or “making fun” Opt out of discussion or activity if uncomfortable Use “I” statements – “I feel”… Safety vs Comfort – Personal growth & risk

6 Sensitive Issues a supportive, non- judgmental classroom climate the element of trust is critical Confidentiality no student or teacher should be placed in a position of feeling pressured to give an opinion or express a viewpoint

7 Confidentiality Exception If you divulge information related to physical and/or sexual abuse, the teacher has a legal responsibility to report it in accordance with the Act Respecting Child, Youth and Family Services ( Child, Youth and Family Services Act, chapter C-12.1, Duty to report).

8 Types of Evaluation presentations; producing videos; writing essays or plays; tests or quizzes charting graphing information; demonstrating a skill; designing a product or a plan; drawing or graphing a concept, a process or an idea
