2 The United Kingdom of Great Britain includes England, Wales, Northern Ireland, and Scotland.

3  Different groups of people all settled in the United Kingdom in a period of time.  The Celts, Romans, Germanic tribes, (Angles and Saxons) and the Normans from France all settled in the UK. Celts settling in UK Romans in UK Normans settle in UK Germanic Tribes in UK

4  By the late 1200s the English kings controlled most of the UK region with Wales and most of Ireland.  In 1707 England, Wales, and Scotland united as the kingdom of Great Britain.  Ireland joined the group in 1801 creating the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland.

5  Ireland split apart in 1949, but Northern Ireland stayed in as part of The United Kingdom. Ireland split apart

6  In 1215 England moves towards a representative government by British nobles forcing King John to sign the Magna Carta.  A group of representatives that represented the people was established and called the parliament. The Nobles influencing King John to sign the Magna Carta

7  In 1689 the English bill of rights strengthened the rights of citizens.  This document limited the power of the monarchy and guaranteed basic freedoms to English citizens. The English of Bill of Rights ratified in 1689

8  In the 1500’s Britain had become prosperous by seeking out imperialism through the age of exploration.  At the height of the British empire (1800’s) it controlled colonies in Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Pakistan, as well as parts of Africa and the Caribbean. 9  In the 1920’s the United Kingdom created the Commonwealth of Nations an association of nations that had been part of the British Empire that agreed to cooperate in political matters and trade.

10  Great Britain was the first Industrial nation and it all began the Industrial Revolution across the world beginning in Great Britain in the 1760’s.  Britain tried to keep industrialization to itself, but it eventually spread to nearby Belgium and France and then the rest of the world. Great Britain was first Industrial Nation in the world

11  Great Britain was involved heavily in both World Wars.  Civilians faced damage throughout the nation, by German air raids.  Great leadership by Winston Churchill led this great nation to overcome the adversities in World War II  It took many years for great Britain to recover from the bombings and war, especially in major cities such as London. Winston Churchill was the Prime Minister of England during the majority of World War II
