Great Moments in Art History Middle Ages to Baroque

Just as the history of events tells us about the past, art reflects society and thus art history helps us unlock the mystery about what historical societies believed in and thought about.

When the Roman Empire dissolves and Christianity and Islam begin to compete, the Middle Ages arrive. In what is now Europe, Vikings carve ships, the Huns depict animals in their art and the Celts design metalwork and stone crosses. Meanwhile, the Byzantine era sees people making glorious mosaics, paintings and small-scale sculptures. Later, Islamic mosques are constructed and Carolingian illuminated manuscripts are created. 373 – 1453 A.D

The Romanesque Style features symbolism, large figures and great French Cathedrals. The Gothic style is rooted in architecture and other forms of art are made to help embellish the houses of the Lord. 1000 - 1500 A. D

Gislebertus was a French sculptor. One of his most notable works is the tympanum sculpture of the western doorway of the Romanesque cathedral at Autun. His imagination was far-reaching, and his work had a lasting effect on the development of French Gothic art.

A rebirth of the arts begins in Italy. Spreading throughout Western Europe, the Renaissance is established and will later be considered the most important movement in art history. Oil paint is used, the Mona Lisa's smile is born. 1400 - 1600 A. D

Dramatic, emotional works of art are made during the Baroque era. Curvy figures, bold self-portraits and enre paintings (images of everyday people) are popular. 1600 - 1700 A. D
