2 What is a Dietitian? The science of food and it’s effect on health. What is in food and how does it affect how the body works? Help people make choices about food to: –K–Keep as healthy as possible –G–Get better if they are already sick

3 How Can Food Keep you Healthy? Food powers our bodies The best fuel = the best performance Important ingredients in food help our body work properly

4 What is in Food? Carbohydrate Energy to do exercise Protein Build strong muscles and healthy skin Fat Healthy skin, eyes, brain. Also used for energy.

5 What is in Food? Fibre Helps food move through the body and healthy heart Vitamins & Minerals Special ingredients that help our bodies do lots of important things

6 What happens if you don’t get enough of the good stuff? You cannot be the best you can be! Fuel your body with the best healthy food - give yourself the best chance to be as healthy as you can be.

7 The Balancing Act Too much of anything is not a good thing – balance is the key. All the different things in food are needed in different amounts. To make it easy for us to remember – Food groups and healthy plate – Everyday foods & Sometimes foods – Variety is the spice of life!

8 Eat For Health Choose mostly everyday foods from these groups

9 What Foods Should We Eat only Sometimes? Too much fat Too much sugar Too much salt Not much of the good stuff!

10 Healthy Drinks Why is important to drink enough fluid? What is the healthiest drink to drink every day? What other drinks are OK to have in small amounts? What drinks should we save for sometimes? Should we drink bottled water or tap water?

12 Variety is the Spice of Life Healthy eating = choosing foods from all the food groups. Missing out on one or some groups, means missing out on important fuel.

13 It can take 20 exposures to a new food for your taste buds to wake up and tell your brain you like it! Give your taste buds a go!
