Unit Summary Students will… Complete 10 poetry responses in MLA format chosen from a large poetry packet of 30-40 poems (Microsoft Word) Complete one poetry pair teaching presentation with a chosen poem, author background, and with a quiz for the class—multiple-choice, high level (PowerPoint, Prezi) Complete one original pair poetry writing assignment for the class based on art or music with no lyrics with your model poem Design a poetic devices cheat sheet for the class with ORIGINAL examples (Publisher, Adobe) Respond to a to a poem via a blog/wiki—well-written, no slang or texting language (Web 2.0 application) Attend and review a Poetry Slam downtown at Coffee Underground (http://witsendpoetry.com/)

Unit Vision My vision for this unit is to increase my students’ understanding of, analysis of, and appreciation for poetry. Students will be dealing with poems on the multiple- choice portion of the AP exam, and they will also be asked to compose an essay about a poem or poems.

Curriculum-Framing Questions Unit Essential Question: How can the study and analysis of different genres of literature reveal universal truths about our world? Unit Question: How can the analysis, composition, and experience of poetry reveal universal themes in literature? Content Questions: What are the 20 main poetic devices used by poets?
