2  Some terms will have definitions only:  What is “voice” in poetry?

3  Voice: “The emotional coloring” readers get from the speaker of the poem.

4  Some questions will ask you to identify your knowledge of the definition to an example:  What literary term is present in the line, “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that’s amore!”

5  This is an example of simile: comparing two things using the words like or as:  “When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie” is comparing the moon to a pizza pie (it’s similar roundness or shape).

6  When a writer gives human qualities to inanimate objects….

8  A poem that has an emotional or song-like quality…

9  Lyric Poetry or Lyric Poem

10  “ The wolves went out again to wander the darkened paths,  With little light, they whistled at the moon.  Then the howling came.”  What literary term is present in this poem?

11  Alliteration:  “The wolves went out again to wander the darkened paths,  With little light, they whistled at the moon.  Then the howling came.”  Repetition of initial consonant sounds.

12  Write a quatrain of free verse poetry on the topic of school.

13  School to me is the richest place  I have ever been.  So many minds working together  To figure out the world.

14  You will be asked to annotate a poem you have never seen before.  Annotations: close readings of text. In an annotation, you must ◦ Underline, circle, and/or highlight key words and/or phrases that are repeated or meaningful ◦ Underline, circle and/or highlight literary terms evident in the text ◦ Ask questions or make comments about possible meanings of text
