Why Do We Need Power Standards? In-Depth Instruction of “Essential” Concepts Vs. Superficial Instruction by “Covering” Every Concept Standards at each grade level often contain more concepts and skills than students can realistically learn in a school year. Power Standards provide consistency and insure all students are being assessed on the same learning targets

Power Standards Demonstrate developmentally appropriate fundamental and complex movement skills. Understands safety procedures and rules in a variety of developmentally appropriate physical activities. Knows and can apply the components of fitness. Compose nutrition goals based on national dietary guidelines and individual activity needs. Understand issues related to legal and illegal drug use and abuse. Analyze daily health and safety habits and create a plan for improvement that supports a healthy lifestyle. Analyze and assess personal health and fitness data. Integrate self-awareness/positive attitude and respect for others. Apply effective social skills to avoid risky situations.
