Mrs. Schell’s Second Grade Class Welcome!

Welcome to Second Grade! In our classroom, there are many opportunities for learning. If you have any questions during my presentation, please let me know.

All About Me Graduated from Salisbury University in 2006 with a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education Graduate from Wilmington College this spring with a Master’s degree in Educational Technology Taught 3 rd grade in Dorchester County, MD 1 year 5 th year teaching in the Seaford School District 4 years in Middle School First year at Fred Douglass

My Goals To help your child grow in all subjects To help your child develop his or her social skills To provide a safe place where your child can grow and learn.

Class Subjects The subjects we will study during second grade are: Reading Writing Math Science Social studies Music, Art, P.E., Computers, and Library

Reading New Treasures Reading Series Read in whole group and in small groups Groups based on: interest, ability, and skills that we are learning Writing journal for practice writing

Writing Part of the new reading program Publishing work every unit Writing across the curriculum in all content areas Student and Class journals

Math Trailblazers Learn how to solve math problems in a way that makes sense Create and explain strategies and discover new ways to solve problems Math folder

Science We will study insects, health and nutrition, balancing and weighing, and soils. Hands on investigations Science folder Review sheets will be sent home before the tests.

Social Studies Second grade topics: belonging to many groups, working together, being good citizens, and people in history. Social Studies folder Review sheets will be sent home before tests

Classroom Community Our class rules are: Try your best. Use nice words and be polite. Be prepared. Keep hands and feet to yourself Be a team player. Behavior: clothespins behind my door Jay Money for positive behavior

Homework Sent out in the beginning of the week Homework is due at the end of the week. This homework schedule is beneficial with busy families Assignments: Spelling (2-3), Math (2-4), Reading Fluency (every night) Comprehension (as the year progresses). Please make yourself available to help your child and check their work. Please sign student’s homework papers every day. Students should read every night. If your child finishes the packet early in the week, have them spend some time with a good book!

Communications Call my extension (250), e-mail me, or write me a note sent with your child Please check the white “Blue Jay” folder nightly and clean it out. Important items will be sent home on the “Bring Right Back” side. The homework sheet has a daily behavior portion. Please check that when you sign it.

Family Participation Please plan to get involved in our classroom this year! Studies show that students are much more successful when their families are involved with their teacher to create a team atmosphere! The more we work together the more successful your child’s year will be!
