Presentation on theme: "Numeracy – KS2 Lesson 2 BBC Children in Need 2015 Delete before using in lesson: Available to print from this document: Pupil sheets (slides 8, 12, 14,"— Presentation transcript:

Numeracy – KS2 Lesson 2 BBC Children in Need 2015 Delete before using in lesson: Available to print from this document: Pupil sheets (slides 8, 12, 14, 15) Also a Pledge sheet (slide 6) And an editable poster template (slide 23)

In the previous lesson, you… Learnt how to facilitate, report and record in a group discussion Reviewed fundraising activities (from last year if schools participated, otherwise made up scenarios) Converted numbers into totals and represented the data in different forms

In this lesson, you will… Learn to use different roles in a group activity Come up with fantastic fundraising ideas for your class Calculate which ideas would be most profitable

Raising a smile... Remember that it doesn’t always take a big thing to make us smile, sometimes a little help makes a lot of difference The same is true when we fundraise for BBC Children in Need; even the smallest donation could make a big difference to a child just like you How much will we raise if everyone in our class donates each to dress up? What if we could double that? How much then?

Let’s make a Champions pledge.. To bring in a donation of £1 each to dress up, even before we start our fundraising!

I…………………………am going to be a Fundraising Champion! I pledge to bring in £1 to wear fancy dress for BBC Children in Need on Friday 13 November 2015

But how exactly should our class raise money to help BBC Children in Need? How can we rise to the challenge and raise more money than ever before? …and how much can we potentially raise? Think back to the roles of the Group Facilitator, Group Reporter and Group Recorder from last lesson. Are you ready for three more?

Today you will each have a group role, but these are all jumbled up! Reporter Your job is to lead the discussion. You are not in charge, but you do decide whose turn it is to speak. You must make sure that everyone has their chance to share their ideas. Recorder Task Master Facilitator Questioner Timekeeper You are responsible for writing down anything important that the group needs to remember. You can write in note form, as long as you can read your own notes! You will be responsible for sharing the group’s ideas with the rest of the class. Make sure you keep to the point and only include the important information. You are in charge of looking for any possible problems with the ideas that the group discuss. You should always be thinking about what could go wrong with any idea. Your job is to make sure that the group is sticking to the task, and that they have done everything that was asked of them. Can you match the names to the descriptions? Your job is to make sure that that the group sticks to the time limits set for each task. Make sure they don’t talk for too long about one idea, or get side tracked onto another topic!

Fundraising ideas You have minutes to come up with a list of possible fundraising ideas for our class to use to raise money for BBC Children in Need Group Task 1

Fundraising Ideas Pupil Sheet Names: Date: Fundraising ideas Pudsey cupcake bake sale

Choosing an idea You have minutes to decide which 3 of your ideas you think will raise the most money for BBC Children in Need Use the questions to help you decide The Reporter will feed back Task 2

Pupil Sheet Choosing an idea 1. Where will it be happening? 2. When will it be happening? 3. Will it cost a lot of money to set up? 4. Have we got what we need? 5. What do we need to get? 6. Will it take a lot of time to set up? 7. Can everyone in the school take part? 8. Will parents or families be involved? 9. How much money should people donate to take part? Names: Date:

Pupil Sheet – Evaluating our group ideas Give each event a score from 0 to 5 for each of the following areas; Idea 1Idea 2Idea 3 Name of idea: Is each idea easy to organise? Is each idea cheap to set up? Is each idea easy to run? Is each idea cheap to take part? Is each idea easy to have more than one go/purchase? Is it easy for parents to take part also? Total points: Best idea from this evaluation: Use a scale where: 0 = very easy1 = easy2 = in-between3= hard4= very hard = very cheap = cheap = in-between= expensive= very expensive

Profit and Loss Remember you can only make a profit if you sell something for more than it costs to make and sell it (your expenses) Profit is the amount of money that you have left over once you’ve taken away your expenses To work out how much profit is made on something you have to first find out how much it cost, then how much it was sold for. The difference between these two is the profit, or loss It is also possible to work out the percentage profit made. Percentage profit = (profit/cost) x 100

How much money could you raise? Answer the questions in column 1 and 2 to calculate column 3 Idea name: ________________ Income – Money coming in! Expenses – Money going out! Profit – How much you make! A.What does it cost for someone to take part in your event? B.How many people do you think will take part? C.How many times will each person take part? Multiple these 3 amounts Do you need to pay for; Cooking ingredients ? Craft materials? Prizes? Equipment? Publicity? Add up the total cost of your expenses Income – Expenses = e.g. Joke-telling competition A.Costs £1 to take part B.Whole class– 30 people C.1 time each £1 x 30 x 1 = £30 Prize for best joke = £4£30 - £4 = £26 Do your working out here

Cutting Costs You have a few minutes to consider ways that you can cut costs even further E.g. local business could donate prizes for a raffle Final Group Task

Cutting costs: Improving our ideas sheet Expenses = Money going out! How can we reduce these costs to make even more profit? Notes First list the things you need to pay for: Cooking ingredients ? Craft materials? Prizes? Equipment? Publicity? Add up the total cost of your expenses _____________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ Now consider how you can: Obtain cheaper (or free) ingredients? Use cheaper (or free) craft materials? Get donated prizes? Borrow equipment? Secure free publicity? Add up the revised cost of your expenses ______________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ ______________________________________ Names: Date:

Looking at your calculations choose the fundraising idea that you have worked out will raise the most money for BBC Children in Need The Reporter from each group should call out their most profitable idea and how much you estimate it could raise Teacher will record each group’s findings As a class decide on your chosen fundraiser Class calculation!

WELL DONE CHAMPIONS! You have chosen the class fundraising idea. But, before we get too excited, we need to take a moment to think about the details! Use these questions to make sure that your event runs smoothly. Why not fill in a planning chart...?  When will it happen?  Where will it happen?  How will people know about it?  What do we need to prepare in advance?  What do we need to prepare on the day?  How will we keep the event safe?  How much should people donate?  How will we collect the money?  Who will take photographs of the event?  When will we count the money? JobComplete byPeople responsible E.g. Make postersFriday 7thAli, Nadia and Sarah M
