4 Continued  Each guild specialized in one occupation  They operated schools and hospitals  They looked after their members and provided for them

5 Becoming a Guild Member  Kids became apprentices at age seven or eight  Spent 7 years being a apprentice  Few apprentices ever became guild masters

6 Rules of the Guilds  Guilds made rules: to protect the quality of their goods regulated hours of labor set prices of their goods

7 Merchant guilds  Merchant guilds were the first and they dominated town life  They passed laws and levied taxes  They were strict about there laws and had harsh punishments

8 Women and guilds  Women worked in many crafts  They usually became guild masters because they knew their trade well  Women usually engaged in their fathers craft
