2 Project Goal To increase the number of underrepresented individuals pursuing an advanced degree and remaining engaged in the field of HSR.

3 Project Objectives  To ascertain if there are barriers to entering HSR and identify these barriers  To learn what institutions are doing to address these barriers  To explore and evaluate if a doctoral fellowship would help increase diversity in HSR  To evaluate the need for and identify a national strategy to promote HSR

4 Diversity in HSR - Methods  Collect trend  Conduct interviews  Conduct URI student focus groups  Search literature on diversity initiatives

8 Diversity in HSR – On-line Survey Preliminary Findings n=13 institutions or 38 percent of the 34 programs in academic-based institutions in the U.S. granting HSR doctoral degrees.
