When we assume fdss

That’s the spirit! fdss

When God teaches us fdss

Examples of “salvation” Lot: Gen. 19:20 “Now behold, this town is near enough to flee to, and it is small. Please, let me escape there (is it not small?) that my life may be saved."

Examples of “salvation” David: 2 Sam. 22:3-4 “My God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, My shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold and my refuge; My savior, You save me from violence.” “I will call upon the Lord who is worthy to be praised. So shall I be saved from my enemies.”

Examples of “salvation” David: Psalm 34:6 “This poor man cried, and the Lord heard him. And saved him out of all his troubles.”

Examples of “salvation” Peter: Matt. 14:30 “But seeing the wind, he became frightened, and beginning to sink, he cried out, ‘Lord, save me!’”

Examples of “salvation” Zacharias: Luke 1:69-71 And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of His servant David, As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, Who have been since the world began, That we should be saved from our enemies And from the hand of all who hate us,

Examples of “salvation” Jesus: John 12:27 “Now My soul has become troubled; and what shall I say, `Father, save Me from this hour’? But for this purpose I came to this hour.”

Examples of “salvation” Peter: Acts 2:40 “And with many other words he solemnly testified and kept on exhorting them, saying, ‘Be saved from this perverse generation!’”

Examples of “salvation” Of Paul: Acts 28:4 “When the natives saw the creature hanging from his hand, they began saying to one another, ‘Undoubtedly this man is a murderer, and though he has been saved from the sea, justice has not allowed him to live.’”

Examples of “salvation” Noah’s family: Heb. 11:7 “By faith Noah, being warned by God about things not yet seen, in reverence prepared an ark for the salvation of his household, by which he condemned the world, and became an heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.”

Examples of “salvation” The sick: James 5:15 “And, the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he has committed sins, they shall be forgiven him.”

Examples of “salvation” I estimate that of the approximately 300 the uses of “save” and related words in the OT, at least one-half involve being delivered from one’s enemies!

Examples of “salvation” It is by far the most common use in the OT.

Examples of “salvation” They often involve the salvation the Messiah-King will bring Israel and explains the attitude of the Jews when He came.

It’s all about the Kingdom and ruling – Ps. 2:1-3 Why do the nations rage, And the people plot a vain thing? The kings of the earth set themselves, And the rulers take counsel together, Against the L ORD and against His Anointed, saying, “Let us break Their bonds in pieces And cast away Their cords from us.”

It’s all about the Kingdom and ruling – Ps. 2:4-6 He who sits in the heavens shall laugh; The Lord shall hold them in derision. Then He shall speak to them in His wrath, And distress them in His deep displeasure: “Yet I have set My King On My holy hill of Zion.”

It’s all about the Kingdom and ruling – Ps. 2:7 “I will declare the decree: The L ORD has said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have begotten You. vessel.’”

It’s all about the Kingdom and ruling – Ps. 2:8-9 Ask of Me, and I will give You The nations for Your inheritance, And the ends of the earth for Your possession. You shall break them with a rod of iron; You shall dash them to pieces like a potter’s vessel.’”

It’s all about the Kingdom and ruling – Ps. 2:10-12 Now therefore, be wise, O kings; Be instructed, you judges of the earth. Serve the L ORD with fear, And rejoice with trembling. Kiss the Son, lest He be angry, And you perish in the way, When His wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all those who put their trust in Him.

Luke 1:68-71- Zacharias “Blessed is the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited and redeemed His people, And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of His servant David, As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets, Who have been since the world began, That we should be saved from our enemies And from the hand of all who hate us,

Israel: Physical, present orientation Kingdom The Obedient Physical, Immediate Blessing

Church: Spiritual, future orientation Kingdom The ObedientFuture reign with Christ

Luke 1:72-75- Zacharias To perform the mercy promised to our fathers And to remember His holy covenant, The oath which He swore to our father Abraham: To grant us that we, Being delivered from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear, In holiness and righteousness before Him all the days of our life.

Luke 1:76-77 - Zacharias “And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Highest; For you will go before the face of the Lord to prepare His ways, To give knowledge of salvation to His people By the remission of their sins,”

Luke 1:78-79 - Zacharias “Through the tender mercy of our God, With which the Dayspring from on high has visited us; To give light to those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death, To guide our feet into the way of peace.”

Examples of “salvation” With that in mind, what possibilities of it’s meaning would be in the mind of these readers who are “Hebrews”?

Salvation in Hebrews: 9:28 “…so Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.”

Salvation in Hebrews: 9:28 1.Jesus’ first coming dealt with the issue of sin 2.He is coming a future second time 3.His second coming doesn’t deal with the sin issue, but His victorious rule! – 10:13 4.It is for believers who are “eagerly” waiting for Him 5.This is called “salvation!

Salvation in Hebrews: 1:13-14 But to which of the angels has He ever said: “Sit at My right hand, Till I make Your enemies Your footstool”? Are they not all ministering spirits sent forth to minister for those who will inherit salvation?

Salvation in Hebrews: 1:13-14 1.Notice that verse 13 mentions the victory of the King over His enemies at a future time 2.The very next verse talks about those who “will inherit (future) salvation” 3.What possibilities were in their minds? 4.This fits the whole context leading up to this

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:5 So also Christ did not glorify Himself to become High Priest, but it was He who said to Him: “You are My Son, Today I have begotten You.”

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:6 As He also says in another place: “You are a priest forever According to the order of Melchizedek”;

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:5-6 His appointment as King and Priest.

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:7 who, in the days of His flesh, when He had offered up prayers and supplications, with vehement cries and tears to Him who was able to save Him from death, and was heard because of His godly fear,

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:7 He died. But, He was “saved from death” in that He was victorious over His enemies by the resurrection!

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:8 though He was a Son, yet He learned obedience by the things which He suffered.

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:8 Suffering precedes glory…even with Jesus! Heb. 12:1-2; also Rom. 8:17-18; 1 Pet. 1

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:9 And having been perfected, He became the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him,

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:9 Salvation here is by works!

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:9 Jesus was “perfected”, but for what? His rule!

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:9 And, now He leads us also into “eternal victory”!

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:9 This understanding fits perfectly with the background and the book.

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:9 To view “salvation” any other way here makes no good sense!

Salvation in Hebrews: 5:9 This understanding fits perfectly with the background and the book.

Salvation in Hebrews God offers salvation to the saved!

Salvation in Hebrews There is no greater offer made to Christians!

Salvation in Hebrews In Psalms, a strong background book to Hebrews, salvation was from the oppression of their enemies and the resultant enjoyment of God’s blessing. The audience to whom Hebrews is written were also suffering and under pressure from outside.

Salvation in Hebrews The reminder in Hebrews is that ultimate victory over all enemies belongs to the Messiah, the King. The angels work now to serve those who pursue partnership with Jesus and share in His victory!

Salvation in Hebrews To share in that salvation, that deliverance from His enemies, in that victory is the offer of the book of Hebrews.

Theme of Hebrews By persevering faith, we can have partnership with God’s King-Priest Son
