4th TIMSIS meeting and Conference, Helsinki, 17. 02. 2006 TIMSIS teacher in-service training material concerning pupils with serious and chronic illnesses in both regular and hospital schools

4th TIMSIS meeting and Conference, Helsinki, 17. 02. 2006 Project History Primary project – Comenius I: Hospital schools in Genova – Stuttgart – Vienna Ludwigsburg University of Education Second project – Comenius II.1 long phase of planning and search for partners We lost Vienna, Genova, Granada, but we found Brnó, Helsinki, Mosdos, Oslo and Samara

4th TIMSIS meeting and Conference, Helsinki, 17. 02. 2006 Project History Application: March 2004 Accepted: August 2004 Official Start: October 2004 Kick-off Meeting: November 2004 End of funding: September 2007

4th TIMSIS meeting and Conference, Helsinki, 17. 02. 2006 Project Partner In each partner country a hospital school and a university form a team with two exceptions: Mosdos (Hungary) and Samara (Russia) possible associated new partner University of Education in Baja (Hungary)

4th TIMSIS meeting and Conference, Helsinki, 17. 02. 2006 Justification Situation of the sick child and her or his family multifold disadvantages of sick children: physical and psychic stress removal from home family and financial worries removal from class loss of social contact to peers reduced period of instruction general impairment of education need of re-integration Pupils who, because of long or repeated periods of absence or the stress resulting from the illness, have a special need for support

4th TIMSIS meeting and Conference, Helsinki, 17. 02. 2006 Justification A lot is being done to ease the situation of the sick child in hospital and in hospital schools. However, there are shorter periods of hospitalisation. Things might look different when it comes to re-integration into their homes and home schools What about the understanding of the class mates? Do teachers in the home schools know how to handle the situation? Do teachers of regular schools have at least minimal knowledge about the disease and about the social and psychological situation the sick child is in? Have they at all been trained to cope appropriately with the situation?

4th TIMSIS meeting and Conference, Helsinki, 17. 02. 2006 Justification Since the basic situation cannot be avoided –all steps should be undertaken to ensure a minimum of friction and conflict on reintegration in the school class –it becomes necessary to compensate as far as possible for the obvious disadvantages This group of pupils tends to be small in number and therefore generally represents individual cases within the school. Some teachers might never have had a chronically or severely sick child in one of their classes. However for reasons of equality of treatment and equality of chance this small group should not be neglected.

4th TIMSIS meeting and Conference, Helsinki, 17. 02. 2006 Target groups Main target group: teachers of regular schools Secondary target group: teachers of hospital schools Parents and families of affected children and adolescents, and the parents of non-affected children and adolescents Indirect target group: (chronically) sick children
