2
The Mountain RISE RUN 200 FEET 400 FEET vertical change horizontal change
3
Finding the slope 200 FEET 400 FEET Slope = rise run = 200 400 2 4 = 1 2 =
4
What’s the slope with ? rise run 12 feet 4 feet Chimney smoke from a house rises 12 feet high for every 4 feet of smoke blowing out of a chimney in an eastward direction. Slope = rise run 12 4 = 3 1 = 3 =
5
Rise and Run on Graph Rise Run rise run = 1 2
6
Rise and Run on Graph rise run = 2 4
7
Rise and Run on Graph rise run = 3 6
8
Rise and Run on Graph rise run = 3 6 = 2 4 = 1 2 = slope
9
Finding Slope Using A Graph Get the ordered pair of any two points. Rise goes up and down on the y-axis: compute for the vertical change using the y-coordinates of both points. Run goes left and right on the x-axis: compute for the horizontal change using the x-coordinates of both points. (-2, -1) (2, 2)

Finding Slope Using A Graph (-2, -1) (2, 2) (-2, -1), (2, 2) Slope = rise run -1- 2 -2 - 2 -3 -4 = 3 4 = OR = Slope = rise run = 2- (-1) 2 - (-2) = 2+1 2 +2 3 4 =

Find the Slope of the Graphs (-1, -1) (2, 1) AB Slope = 2 3 Slope = - 5 2 Positive Slope Negative Slope
12
Finding Slope Using A Table xy 112 39 56 73 Pick any two ordered pairs. (1, 12) and (5, 6) Slope = rise run = 6 - 12 5 - 1 - 6 4 = - 3 2 = The slope means the rise (y) decreases by 3, the run (x) increases by 2. negative slope

Find the Slope of the Tables xy -6-2 20 61 x-4048 y-2-3-4 Slope = 1 4 Slope = - 1 4 Positive Slope Negative Slope A B
14
Aquariums DAY DEPTH (INCHES) The graph shows the depth of water in an aquarium over several days. Find the slope of the line. Explain its meaning as a rate of change. (0, 0) and (16, -10) Slope = - 5 8
15
Practice Worksheet Complete the practice worksheet. Work with a partner or on your own. Submit completed worksheet for grading. Solutions are discussed the next day.
16
Exit Slip Turn in your discussion answers. You earn a point towards a quiz below A. If you have an A on the quiz, the point is applied on you lowest scored- homework. The point is added to the percent grade.
