WRITING EQUATIONS IN SLOPE-INTERCEPT FORM Standard Form
2
What is the slope of a hill that rises 6 feet for every horizontal change of 30 feet. Below is a table of data showing how much Miss Jones pays to rent a car. Number of DaysTotal Cost 050 170 290 3110 4130 Write an equation that will find the total cost of renting the car for n days. What does the slope and y-intercept mean? If Miss Jones paid a total of $190, how many days did she rent the car for? A truck used 5.5 gallons of gas to travel 95 miles. The same truck used 18 gallons of gas to travel 180 miles. What is the rate of change?

Slope intercept form : y = mx + b Standard form: Ax + By = C We have been working with slope intercept form when writing equations of lines. Today we will look at standard form, and convert an equation in standard form to slope intercept form so that we can identify slope and y-intercept.
4
STANDARD FORM To write an equation from standard form into slope intercept form, do the following: 1.Write the equation y = mx + b. 2.Write out the equation that you have been given. 3.Rearrange the equation so that it is in the form of y = mx + b. 4.State the slope and y-intercept. Example: Write 6x + 3y = - 24 in slope intercept form. y = mx + bWrite out equation of a line. 6x + 3y = -24Write out equation that was given. -6x - 6xRearrange equation. 3y = - 6x – 24Solve ( divide by the number in front of y). y = -2x - 8
5
Write 5x – 3y = 6 in slope intercept form. Identify the slope and y-intercept. Graph your line. m = b = y = Time to practice……
6
Write the following equation in slope intercept form. State the slope and the y-intercept. Draw the line. 2x – y = -3 m = b = y =
7
Graph the following equation: 2y = 6x – 4 m = b = y =
8
Graph: 4x – 3y = 3 m = y = b =

CLASSWORK With a partner, or with your group, complete the activity: Stevie’s Hobbies. You will be handing this in at the end of the lesson for a grade. You must attempt to complete the worksheet if you want a 100% completion grade.

TICKET OUT THE DOOR On the index card you have been given, use the equations to find the slopes and y-intercepts. a. 4y – 5x = 20 b.2y + 3x = 6
