Definition A scatter plot is a relationship between multiple(two) sets of data graphed with plotted points. Instead of two separate graphs, scatter plots allow you to combine the information into one graph. In scatter plots, you use numerical data and not categorical data.

Example You could use a scatter plot to compare height and weight. In this type of graph, you need multiple(two) sets of data. The sets of data have to somehow correlate with each other.

Data Collected For our graph, we compared the number of minutes studied vs. the percentage received on the Chapter 6 test. We asked people in Mrs. Ellwood’s 7 th period Honors Algebra class how many minutes they studied and what they got on the test.

Graph

Explanation How to make a scatter plot: 1. Find two sets of data that correlate with each other. 2. Record data as x and y values or ordered pairs. 3. Create a blank coordinate plane with x and y axes. 4. Label the axes and title. 5. Plot all of your data.

Problem Using the line of fit of (5, 84) and (30, 93) what grade would someone who studied 20 minutes get on the test? (Hint: Find the slope first, then use slope- intercept form.)

Answer Someone who studied 20 minutes would receive an... 89.4%

Advantages You can easily see how two sets of data relate with each other. This graph is perfect for comparing correlating data that would otherwise have been put on two separate graphs. You can easily find the best line of fit. The line of fit will help you see approximate trends throughout the data collected.

Disadvantages You cannot easily see exact numbers in the data. The points are scattered randomly across the graph according to the data, so you cannot obtain exact numbers from just observing the graph. Data can be unseen if it repeats, as the points would be on top of each other.
