1 ISU Science Center : Phase 3 : Dec 09-10 Speedometer Station This station matches two areas of study into one cohesive system. Current will be induced by a magnet that is attached to a wheel. This current can then be used by a circuit to power an LED display. With more speed more LEDs will light up. Bluetooth Station: This station focuses on leveraging technology that students are likely to use on a daily basis. It will consist of a Bluetooth USB device on the main computer in the room and will scan for Bluetooth devices such as cell phones and PDAs that students may be carrying when they enter the room. It will display the name and type of each device found as well as what types of Bluetooth services it offers. Alternative Energy Station This station uses a windmill and a solar panel to generate electricity. This electricity is sent down a wire to a pair of coils that uses induction to transmit the electricity wirelessly. The electricity is then sent to an LED grid. The each LED in the grid illuminates in succession to provide a qualitative indication of the amount of power generated. Frequency Spectrum Analyzer This station seeks to compare two methods used to analyze the range of sound frequencies. One will be a hardware approach using circuit components and the other approach will use a LabVIEW interface from which the user can both generate and then in turn analyze sound. Both approaches will use an LED array on which the output will be displayed that shows what frequencies were in the signal. Room Networking The overall connectivity of each station relies upon networking improving interactivity throughout the science center. This networking is achieved by using a wired network. Network traffic and results from each station are displayed on a large monitor in the room to show how networking operates. Each major at Iowa State University uses a series of demonstrations in order to encourage people to choose a particular field of study in engineering. Despite being the leader in technological advances at the current time, electrical and computer engineering (ECprE) does not have any form of demonstration to attract people's interests. The technology surrounding people such as cell phones, computers, and video games have become commonplace, and have lost their potential to create excitement for the field of ECprE. The solution proposed is the further development of an interactive room that will demonstrate principles of ECprE. A laboratory has been fitted with various sensors capable of feeding back data to a computer. This lab is to be upgraded with additional sensors and increased use of space, including multiple individual activity stations. The development of each station and enhanced sensory will be designed and implemented by the May 09-07 team. Introduction Abstract ISU needs to continuously recruit new students to the EE/CprE program. The department needs a mechanism to help recruit new students. This mechanism can be spear headed by an interactive room containing displays that demonstrate computer and electrical engineering. This is a second stage of the project. The previous team focused on room interactions. Our team is working on individual stations that seek to show concepts related to electrical and computer engineering to prospective students.
