How are non-fiction books organised? BY THEIR SUBJECT

NON-FICTION BOOKS ARE GROUPED ON THE SHELVES BY SUBJECT. EACH SUBJECT THEN HAS A NUMBER CALLED THE CLASSIFICATION NUMBER WHICH IS ON THE SPINE OF THE BOOK. (This is also known as the ‘call number’. ) SOME OF THE NUMBERS ARE DECIMAL NUMBERS THIS HELPS TO KEEP EVERYTHING IN ORDER AND ALSO HELPS YOU TO FIND THE BOOKS YOU NEED.

THE MAN WHO INVENTED THIS SYSTEM FOR ORGANISING NON-FICTION BOOKS WAS CALLED MELVIL DEWEY IT IS NAMED AFTER HIM AND CALLED – THE DEWEY DECIMAL CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

THE BOOKS ARE PLACED ON THE SHELVES FROM THE SMALLEST NUMBER TO THE HIGHEST

Question ?????????????? We now know how the books are organised on the shelves however……. How do we find out who is the author of a fiction book ? How do we find out which number a non-fiction book has?

LIBRARY CATALOGUE The library catalogue tells you what resources the library has and where to find them. It tells you the authors, titles, subjects and classification numbers of books. You can access the library catalogue from any computer in the school or there is a link on the home page of this site.
