Is it happening? Highlights of a world tour Ideas for cure and prevention of chronic diseases are converging globally. The fact that diabetes, CVD, chronic lung diseases and some cancers share risk factors has become apparent and accepted
6
Role of governments Governments actively seek reforms, initially to control costs, but chronic diseases are clilmbing higher on their agendas. Solutions will be centralised in most OECD countries – decentralised in the US Smoking bans in Irish pubs! Who is next?
7
New awareness for chronic diseases Advocacy groups are spotting health as a neglected ’big issue’: –Obesity and chronic diseases are likely candidate –global issues involving multinational companies and organisations.
8
Change in the industry? Food industry Game/play industry Finance/insurance industry Pharmaceutical industry
9
Changes in Novo Nordisk? more awareness, discussions focus on new business models openness to engage for with other companies “World Diabetes Foundation” prevention initiatives
10
A better environment for solutions! Key decision-makers and stakeholders increasingly focus on chronic diseases, public health and primary care. There is room for industry to be part of the solution – old power structures will dissolve and new players emerge.
11
So...did I change? Yes. I am much more positive I am astounded about the speed of change I am now convinced –that we need more action –that we can only succeed in open discussions –that we must dare and create new partnerships
12
Why is Oxford Vision 2020 needed? raise awareness of an important neglected area – chronic diseases raise the level of importance for the risk factors – few others focus on those, and on their interaction foster new thinking, approaches and actions create new and important relationships –Discuss health in a broader context than intervention in diseases
