2 Design  Step 1: Our device begins with a swinging wooden block that hits a marble resting on a metal track.  Step 2: The marble rolls up the metal track and falls into a cup attached to a pulley system.  Step 3: The pulley system is balanced so that the marble counteracts the lever, pulling up a wooden block, and lowering a cup at the opposite end.

3 Design cont.  Step 4: As the lever falls, another marble is released onto a track. The marble then rolls to the end of the track and lands on a separate set of tracks.  Step 5: On this track, the marble will collide with another marble, pushing it off the track and onto a mouse trap.  Step 6: The mouse trap releases and completes a circuit, turning on an LED light.

5 Calculations  After the wooden block is dropped, it hits the marble, sending it forward at with a velocity of 2.32 ft/s.  The marble follows the incline and falls into the cup, rotating the pulley π rad.  The pulley raises one end of the lever +.42 ft, lowering the other end -.83 ft.  The second marble rolls 1.3 ft down a 10° incline with an acceleration of.54 ft/s² onto a second track.

6 Calculations cont.  Marble then rolls down a track below horizontal and collides with another marble, sending both off the track and onto the mousetrap with a velocity of 2.6 ft/s.
