Introduction Everyone who was alive 10 years ago likely remembers the details of the horror, shock, and awe of terrorists hijacking planes and flying them into the Twin Towers, the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania. (brave men likely averted it crashing into the White House) It was the deadliest attack in US history as nearly 3,000 were killed as the Twin Towers collapsed as it was broadcast on live TV. What lessons can we learn on this 10 th anniversary of 9-11? Let us examine ourselves by the Scriptures. (1 Thess. 5:21-22; 2 Tim. 2:15; Acts 17:11)

Evil Exists in This Fallen World Satan is the original terrorist who has been a murderer from the beginning and seeks to devour our souls through his temptations to sin. (John 8:44; 1 Pet. 5:8; Eph. 6:12) When men reject the God of heaven, He gives them up to their sinful desires (Rom. 1:18ff; Jas. 1:13-16). Through the crucifixion of Christ we can overcome every temptation of the devil and do not have to fear death (Heb. 2:14-15; 1 Cor. 10:13). Put on God’s armor so that you can stand firm against the schemes of the devil (Eph. 6:10-11; 1 Pt. 5:9f).

The Terror of Hopelessness There was no way of escape for those who are on the hijacked planes or those in the Twin Towers (along with the emergency responders) when they collapsed but only the fearful expectation of death. Their loved ones could only wait and wonder what happened to them when they did not come home. We need to realize spiritually that we are helpless and hopeless without God in this world (Eph. 2:12). Through Jesus Christ, we have a hope that will anchor our soul when we face times of tribulation. (Heb. 6:19-20)

Judgment will be Sudden & Unexpected The people that were alive in those planes and buildings had no idea that was going to be the last day of their lives. The Second Coming of Christ will come in the same manner. “…the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night. While they are saying, ‘Peace and safety!’ then destruction will come upon them suddenly like labor pains upon a woman with child, they will not escape” (1 Thess. 5:2b-3). Jesus tells us to “Take heed, watch and pray, for you do not know when the time is” (Mark 13:33).
7
Sinners Need to Repent Now If those on that day were unprepared to meet God, there was no time to repent. When Jesus heard reports about those who suffered death at the hands of Pilate and the 18 that died in a tower He asked if they were greater sinners than others. Jesus answered, “I tell you no, but unless you repent you will all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3, 5). Those who tragically died on 9-11 are a reminder to us not to wait until tomorrow to repent of our sins. (Acts 17:30-31; 2 Cor. 6:2)

Conclusion Americans were scared and were seeking spiritual help for about six months after 9-11 but went back to their sinful lifestyle after that. “The Lord is patient toward you, not wishing for any to perish but for all to come to repentance. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, in which the heavens will pass away with a roar and the elements will be destroyed with intense heat, and the earth and its works will be burned up”. (2 Peter 3:9-10). Are you ready for the Judgment Day? If not, obey the gospel or be restored today. (Heb. 5:8-9; Acts 8:20-22)
