2 When and Where was 9/11? On the morning of September 11th, 2001, terrorists attacked the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon of Washington, D.C.

3 What Happened? Terrorists hijacked 4 commercial airliners headed across the country with plans to attack the U.S.

4 Two of those planes were flown into the Twin Towers
One was flown into the Pentagon The fourth plane crashed in Pennsylvania missing its target, the Capitol Building. We owe this to the heroic passengers on board.

5 The Initial Effects Around 3,000 people lost their lives that day, including members on the plane, heroic firemen, courageous police officers, and workers. America was on high alert. People began to work together to help each other through this tough time.

6 Why the World Trade Center?
The World Trade Center was a complex of buildings housing many different businesses. During a typical weekday 50,000 people worked in the towers and an additional 200,000 people would visit there. The Twin Towers were the tallest buildings in the world from They stood over 1,350 feet tall. The buildings were so busy that they even had their own Zip code.

7 Why the Pentagon? It is located in Washington, D.C.
It is the home of the Department of Defense for the United States. It employs over 23,000 military and civilians personnel. It is the heart of our nation’s defense team.

8 Flight 93 This plane was headed to California.
Hijackers planned to use it for the U.S. Capitol Building attack. It contained 40 crew members and passengers that bravely risk their lives to help America. A memorial was built in honor of flight 93 where it crashed in Stoystown, PA

9 The effects of September 11th
The attacks caused President George W. Bush to launch the “War on Terror”. Troops began traveling oversees. Airport security was drastically increased, to prevent this from happening again. America came together!
