N EGATIVE THERMAL EXPANSION OF ZEOLITES PROJECT BY SINEAD, ILARIA, ISSY, DAVE AND SID
2
W HAT ARE Z EOLITES ? Zeolites are microporous crystalline solids with well-defined structures.
3
Z EOLITES THAT WE LOOKED AT
4
Do SBE, MRE and RHO show negative thermal expansion?
5
Generally, materials expand when heated because the particles gain kinetic energy and so vibrate more. Some of theses zeolites decrease in volume when heated.
6
H OW WE DID IT We collected data about the zeolite structures All the operations were done on the Linux operating system The number of SI and O atoms were entered, and we changed certain variables to run the test. The data was then analysed.

“Zeolite RHO has an unusual three dimensional monolayer surface with a topology that gives equal access to either side of the surface.”
