What are mailing lists? A list of names and email addresses for a group of people who share a common interest. Messages are automatically forwarded to everyone on the list.

List Moderator- Person who moderates a list to ensure the list deals with relevant information. Moderated List A list in which a person moderates to check the postings. Unmoderated list Postings are made automatically without a moderator

Usenet An information network to which people can post and read messages and opinions

Mailing-list programs manage two types of emails: Messages Commands

If you don’t receive a message within 36 hours of subscribing, resend the subscription request. Closed list- One in which membership is not automatic. Open list- One that automatically accepts all subscription requests.

Posting Messages Sending an email to the mailing list Lurking- Observing without posting messages.

Reading Archived Files List of files received in the past Review to find past messages of interest

Identifying other list members List Owner- The administrator who controls the list The Owner may make the list members’ information available to other members.

Leaving a Mailing List Unsubscribe- removing your name from a list “unsubscribe” followed by the list name
