When choosing a CTE course for all special needs students: Pre-Assessment results are Key in Career/Technical Education Courses. The student’s interest, and ability must be considered in placement. AL SDE Administrative Code 290-6-1-.05-5(a) Use Career Cruising On-line to determine pathway. www.careercruising.com
3
Check the Academic Guide or web site for courses offered: www.bcbe.orgwww.bcbe.org Print the objectives for the Career/Technical Alabama Course of Study. www.alsde.eduwww.alsde.edu Ensure the student meets the requirements on the Essential Functions List. Set or review the student’s career objective.

NOTES: Students participating in Cooperative Education should have a career objective. Course offerings in the system must also be considered as the career objective is determined.
5
Students should be exposed to curriculum relevant to their career objective to be eligible for participation in cooperative education. If the system does not offer courses that relate to student’s career objective, the student is not eligible to participate. A choice must then be made to select an objective that will allow the student to take courses that are offered.
6
Example: Career Objective: Registered Nurse Career/Technical Courses 1. Therapeutic Innovations and Dynamics of Diagnostics 2. Clinical Spectrum
7
Invite the CTE Teacher to the IEP meeting when possible. Provide ample notice to teacher. A CTE designee having content knowledge shall serve on the IEP committee at all IEP meetings when students are placed in CTE courses. AL SDE Administrative Code 290-6-1-.05-5 (c) Please Note: The Career & Technical Teacher is the best representative for his/her program.
8

18
Remember! Students should be responsible and follow the guidelines of the cooperative education program to be successful.
19
Teachers want students to be successful! CTE Teachers must consider safety issues in their department. Students are required to meet expectations in the course of study. All CTE Programs are reviewed through the Business and Industry Certification process or NCCER certification and must meet all requirements
20
There must be good communication between the Case Manager and the CTE teacher. If the student is not doing well in Career Technical Courses or Coordinated Studies, the case manager should be contacted and remediation plan should be developed immediately.
21
AOD students should have completed all requirements and are on track to graduate before being place in coop. Discovering credit deficiencies during the student’s senior year prevents completion of the anticipated graduation date. NOTES:
