Unit 9C and 9D Lesson 7 Weeds and Pests Objective: to learn how we prevent weeds and other pests destroying farmers crops. To learn some of the problems with the above methods.

Weeds and Pests Both of these are very common terms but have very specific meanings. Weed: any plant which is growing where we don’t want it to. They can prevent crops from growing by stealing water and nutrients. Pest: is an animal (bird, slug, insect, mouse, etc.) which is destroying crops.

Herbicides, Pesticides, Fungicides, and Insecticides. Herbicides: chemicals which destroy plants. Pesticides: chemicals which destroy pest. Fungicides: chemicals which destroy fungi. Insecticides: chemicals which destroy insects.

Type of Herbicides There are two types of herbicides: –Non-selective: kill a large variety of plants sometimes including the crop. They have to be sprayed before the crop is planted. –Selective: Are designed to kill only certain types of plants. They can be sprayed after the crop has been planted.

General Herbicide Application General Application is the process of spraying an entire field including crop and weeds. Crop Dusting Crop Spraying

Spot Spraying Herbicide Application For spot application the herbicide sprayer is carried on a persons back or in a spray bottle. The weeds can then be sprayed one at a time.

Weed Wiper Herbicide Application Weed Wiper: a wick is soaked in herbicide and mounted on a tractor and set to a certain height. Only the plants tall enough to reach the wick will be treated with herbicide. Herbicide is applied to the wick. Only plants tall enough to touch the wick get a herbicide application.
