Introduction to lipid metabolism 1.Definition. 2. Function of lipids. 3. Classification of lipids. 4. Digestion of lipids. 5. Absorption of lipids.

.Definition Lipids (Fats) are organic substances which are water insoluble but soluble in fat solvents (Polar solvents). These polar solvents include Alcohols, chloroform, ethers, Benzene, acetone…etc

.Function of lipids 1.Lipids supply the body with energy. 1 gm fat gives 9.3 Kcal. 2.Make the food palatable. 3.Laxative 4.Keep the body contour. 5.Fixation of internal organs. 6.Enter in the structure of cell membrane.

.Classifiation of lipids 1.Simple lipids: (Neutral fat and wax) 2.Compound (complex) lipids: (simple lipids and other substances) 3.Derived lipids: from hydrolysis of simple and compound lipids 4.Substances associated with lipids:

.Digestion of lipids Digestion Enzymes Lingual lipase activate Gastric lipase -Pancreatic lipase -Cholesterol esterase -Phospholipase A2 Trypsin activates Pro-colipasePro-phospholipase A2 Catalyst & coenzymes Colipase Others Bile acids & Salts
